Last night I finished my last class of the semester – I’m now more than halfway towards getting my Masters. The paper, a manifesto on subversive teaching (don’t get your bureaucratic panties in a bunch, it’s not crazy and a billion times awesomer than you think) turned out alright, though Matt told me I’d be more likely to get play on “Talk Left” than NPR – that cut me to the bone.
I bid farewell to my advisor – the guy is fantastic. He told be that I’ve challenged him, a compliment that is hard to match, and insinuated that I was, well, his favorite. I have never had a mentor before or a professor so willing to engage in debate or conversation with me. And I had never been encouraged to think of myself as an intellectual agent before – or taken totally seriously as someone with the potential to move systems. For all the frustration this program has afforded me (the ridiculous Saturday “class,” the offensively simple technology class, etc.) I can happily call my 25th year hugely formative.
